Hundreds of fans lined the turf and filled the stands last night to watch a repeat clash of last year’s final between the Black Sticks and Japan at the Vantage Hawke’s Bay Festival of Hockey.

The crowd cheered and clapped as the home side topped Japan 3-0 closing the tournament in excellent fashion.

The festival which started on March 31 and ended yesterday saw the Black Sticks defeat Japan, Australia and USA to take home the Hawke’s Bay Cup.

Festival director David Nancarrow was thrilled with the turnout last night and said more than 1200 people had come through the Hawke’s Bay Regional Sports Park gates.

“It always helps when the home side gets to the final but I think there have been some excellent games of hockey,” he said.

“All four sides have been evenly matched and three teams right up until the last 10 minutes on Saturday were all still in the hunt for a finals spot.”
